Liberal Firearms Legislation Fails Law-Abiding Gun Owners

March 22, 2018

Yesterday, the Liberals introduced Bill C-71, An Act to amend certain Acts and Regulations in relation to firearms. This legislation does nothing to address violence in urban and rural communities, and introduces a wasteful and ineffective firearms registry.
This is simply the long-gun registry 2.0. I will never support any legislation that targets law-abiding firearms owners, like many of the farmers in my riding, and that treats them like criminals.
This legislation has no new measure to combat the escalating crime rates in our rural communities, or to combat gang violence in places like Surrey and the GTA. Liberals cannot be trusted when it comes to firearms legislation because they fail to tackle criminals who use guns to commit violent crime, while treating law-abiding firearms owners as criminals.
As Conservatives, we will continue to fight for concrete actions to keep Canadians safe and focus our efforts on the criminal element behind gun violence. This legislation is nothing more than a backdoor attempt to bring back the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry.
